We are very pleased to announce the availability of DeltaBak. A new type of backup solution, developed and supported by us in house.
Briefly, DeltaBak works by maintaining a single copy of all your files (spreadsheet, word processing, graphics, CAD, project, source code, etc). This copy or "Replica Set" can be stored on any disk/storage system available or on the file resource itself, although not recommended, as the Replica Set acts as the primary backup of your data and should be independent of the device holding the live data. Using the Replica Set, DeltaBak archives changes/modifications to the live data files and folders and complete file (and/or folder) deletions, and creates a repository of these changed and deleted files and folders on a configurable (usually daily) basis. This archive could span months or even years* and effectively also provides a versioning system for your changed files too. New files are simply refreshed to the Replica Set during the archiving process.
By only archiving the actual files/folders that have been changed (or deleted), the space and time required for backup is considerably reduced. For example, a live 240GB data set has generated 70GB (48GB compressed) of data for 12 months archiving/monitoring. Compare this to (5 days x 52 weeks x 12 months x 240GB) = 748,880GB to fully backup the same data, assuming no growth. In addition, these "Delta Files" can also be automatically backed up to other disk systems for added redundancy and security by the software.
This is a vast improvement over the traditional method of a 1 or 2 week tape cycle or rolling 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 day copy to disk (which may need to decrease as the data increases) for both speed and flexibility, when file deletions or changes are not necessarily identified until some weeks after the event, when the recovery window has passed and it would then be too late.
Another feature of DeltaBak is an option to replicate the entire desired live data set to another (offsite) storage device or service (remote co-location centre for example). All comparisons to the data set are carried out locally, so only those files that have been changed, deleted or created are copied or actioned. This improves speed and performance when utilising precious bandwidth resources. Finally, DeltaBak can email you a summary of the completed backup job in all cases.
